This is an introductory course focusing on algebraic concepts and skills and their applications to real life situations. Students who test just below the minimum prerequisites skills will have the opportunity to review the necessary skills within EdReady Montana. Students will take a placement test in the first week of the course which will analyze their basic skills. Students will draw upon their knowledge of the rational number system which requires comfort with negative numbers, fractions, and decimals (with and without a calculator). Students require the minimum of middle school math knowledge within number sense as this course is not designed to provide remedial instruction for middle school topics. Students will apply mathematical skills and make meaningful connections to life’s experiences. Students will analyze situations verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically. Students will investigate and explore mathematical ideas and develop multiple strategies for analyzing complex situations. Students will have an introduction to systems of equations, and solve simple systems.
Students will learn to recognize and generate equivalent expressions and solve single-variable equations and inequalities. Students will learn to think flexibly about relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will extend their elementary skills and begin to learn algebra concepts that serve as a transition into formal Algebra and Geometry. The goal of Pre-Algebra is to develop fluency with rational numbers, and proportional relationships, and to expand knowledge of irrational numbers.
